ABOUT THE GREATER BUFFELSDRIFT CONSERVANCY
Lying on the western boundaries of the Dinokeng area, between the Roodeplaat Dam and the N1 highway, Buffelsdrift Conservancy has become a fairly popular place to visit not only because it is so easy to reach, but also as a birding spot for birders.
This is due in no small part to the proximity of the Roodeplaat dam, from which an extensive canal system runs, and the Pienaars River that runs along the Southern border of the conservancy, attracting birds for most of the year.
But Buffelsdrift is far more than simply a wonderful space in which to spot birds. Its location is pretty unique. It lies in an old volcanic crater and this, together with the fact that this area also lies between the bushveld and the Highveld regions and is home to a number of wetlands, rocky ridges and riverbanks, mean that it has its fair share of animal and plant life.
