Stanger became a municipality in 1949 and evolved into a commercial and railway hub for the surrounding sugar-producing region. In 2006, the town's name was officially changed from Stanger to KwaDukuza by order of the Minister of Arts and Culture, as published in the Government Gazette on 3 March 2006.
