Prince's Grant Golf Estate's history: uncover the backstory
Previously a part of the Hyde Park farm, Prince's Grant was acquired by George Wilson Prince on 20 October 1856 through a Deed of Grant from Her Majesty Queen Victoria. The property, spanning 3,354 acres, was purchased for the sum of two pounds, five shillings, and four pence sterling.
Later, Babu Bodasing, an indentured cane cutter from India, took ownership of the farm. During his time, he accumulated properties in Natal and Hyde Park, which eventually included the land where Prince's Grant Golf Estate stands today. The estate still carries some features from the Bodasing era, such as the 16th hole named "Paddyfield".
The construction of the golf course began in 1992, and it was opened for play in June 1994, with the clubhouse inaugurated by Hugh Baiocchi, the first director of golf, in November 1994. In order to retain an association between the property's history and the present-day estate, the developers decided to use the name Prince's Grant.
