Constantia's weather: discover the patterns

With its sunny Mediterranean climate and cool breezes drifting in from the Atlantic Ocean, Constantia provides a pleasant environment for healthy grape crops as well as local residents. In February, the area's hottest month, Constantia is pleasantly warm and breezy, ranging from a low of 18°C to a high of 25°C. In August, the area's coldest month, the suburb is only slightly chilly and breezy ranging from the low to high teens. This makes it ideal for premium cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux Blend wines to grow exceptionally.

Constantia's history: uncover the backstory

By living in Constantia, you become part of an area rich in history. In 1685, Simon van der Stel, the Dutch Colonial Governor of Cape Town, was granted the former estate in the magisterial district of Wynberg. The huge farm he set up here was named Constantia after the daughter of the Commissioner Rijckloff van Goens. Constance or Constanza (depending on the source) had played a crucial role in helping Van der Stel gain control of this prime piece of real estate.

Van der Stel built a sumptuous homestead and planted over 70 000 grape vines, with produce renowned for its exquisite taste. While the farm would be split up and sold following his death, his legacy lives on in the prominent wineries that form part of the area. In 2021, three Constantia farms (Klein Constantia, Steenberg Vineyards, and Groot Constantia) all placed in the South African top ten and within the top 100 internationally for the World's Best Vineyards ranking.
