Overview Attractions Properties Branches News

Fresnaye, positioned between Signal Hill and Sea Point, stands as one of Cape Town's most affluent suburbs, located just a few kilometres west of the Central Business District. Fresnaye's prime location on the mountain, its protection from the notorious south-easterly winds and its convenient proximity to Cape Town have resulted in the development of some of the most luxurious real estate along the Atlantic Seaboard. The streets, aligning with the suburb's name, draw inspiration from locations in France, while the breathtaking views encompass panoramic scenes of the Atlantic, Table Bay and Robben Island. Living in this suburb provides easy access to the city centre's diverse museums, galleries and charming alleyways. It is also only minutes away from the V&A Waterfront, making Fresnaye an ideal residential choice.

Fresnaye's history: uncover the backstory

In the early 1800s, Fresnaye originated as a 200-acre estate owned by Ryk Le Sueur, a barrister and French aristocrat hailing from Bayeux in Normandy and descended from the French Huguenots. Originally named Winterslust, the farmhouse, the sole structure on the mountain slopes at that time, shared that distinction with Heeren Huis near Bantry Bay, constructed in 1776. Fresnaye was surrounded by vineyards and orchards, earning it the moniker "A Garden of Eden" during that era. The enduring French heritage of Fresnaye is reflected in its street names today.
