Woodstock's history: uncover the backstory

As one of Cape Town's earliest suburbs, Woodstock typically has a rich history. It was originally known as Papendorp, named after Pieter van Papendorp who lived in the area in the mid-eighteenth century. Following the inclusion of a railway line, Woodstock flourished as a small but trendy fishing village with a large beach stretching to the Castle of Good Hope.

After briefly being known as New Brighton, Woodstock received its current name at a resident's meeting. Local fishermen in attendance proposed the name in honour of their favourite watering hole, the Woodstock Hotel. Following increased industrialisation, the area experienced rapid growth in the 1800s. In recent years, major urban regeneration has improved the appearance, atmosphere, and safety of the area, including choice amenities like the popular Neighbourgoods Market.
