The region where Centurion now stands was initially inhabited by the Tswana people. Later, the Boers settled in the area, bringing their culture and customs. The town was founded in 1962 and named Verwoerdburg after the former South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd.

In 1995, the town was renamed Centurion, after the Roman centurions who commanded 100 soldiers.
