Upon relocating to Knysna, George Rex, an enterprising British immigrant often hailed as Knysna's founding figure, secured the leasehold rights to Melkhoutkraal in 1804. Subsequently, in 1816, he acquired the farm Welbedacht, renaming it Eastford. Notably, Rex generously allocated 80 acres (32 ha) of Eastford to the Colonial Government, facilitating the establishment of the township of Melville by the Royal Navy. Following Rex's demise in 1839, his extensive properties underwent sale transactions.
