Originally labelled Bahia or Aquada Sao Bras, translating to 'Watering Place of Saint Blaize' by Vasco da Gama in 1497, the area was formerly known as Agra dos Vagueiros, Bay of Herders, as designated by Bartholomeu Dias in 1488. The name Mossel Bay was bestowed upon it by Paulus van Caerden in 1601, as documented by Commelin in 1646.

In the years of history, Mossel Bay attained the status of a town and magistrate's district in 1848, and on the 12th of July 1852, it was formally declared a Municipality.
