The area has a fascinating history shaped by indigenous peoples - the San or Bushmen and, later, the Khoikhoi. While there isn't much direct evidence left in Wilderness, remnants like shell middens, caves, and ancient rock art tell its stories. More than a hundred years after the Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652, the area began to take shape. In 1877, George Bennet of Liverpool purchased a plot of land at the mouth of the Touw River. The farm was named "The Wilderness". Over the years, George Bennet and his wife developed the area.
